Mock-up
Here is my mock up. At this point, I’m unhappy with it and need to rethink a few things. The main things on which I need advice are the color scheme and the basic format—the menu at the bottom, the titles at the top, etc. On the color scheme, I am following the Hungarian flag. On the format, I want to try to keep the site’s pages the same size, to keep people from having to scroll down to see the entire page.
A few points to keep in mind as you look at the pages:
1) The “Contribute” page is empty, because I am still trying to figure out the annotation system. By the day of the presentation, some of the details should be ironed out.
2) Please ignore what I wrote in the “About” section. Actually, all of the text in the mock-up is tentative. Anyway, I am thinking about building a history of what happened in the town from the film, and, then, I will keep revising the history a bit like a Wikipedia page as I find new sources from my research there and from peoples’ annotations.
Did you think off adding some local symbols to the site, like coat of arms or local flag. It seems to me that a sense of locality is much more desirable than an abstract national symbol.

That’s a great point. I want to keep the flag at the top right somewhere on the site, because it’s a symbol of the revolution–there was a communist coat of arms in the middle, so people tore it out of the flag. Maybe, though, I could use the colors of the town, which I’m sure has its own flag, or from the region it’s in, Bacs-Kiskun. It all depends on what local symbols the locals would identify with. Thanks for the great idea.

I like the format overall. Maybe you can adjust the sizing if you’re unsure about the look, or maybe play with fonts. I think you need to keep the menu at the bottom on all pages but it needs to be simplified. Perhaps you can have rollover text boxes with the descriptions on the bottom menu?
Using the flag for the color scheme is a great idea. Is there a way to grade the color across all 3 bands? right now it’s graded in each color, which is pretty but takes away from a feeling of unity the flag has. Can you maybe grade the color horizontally so it lines up in all the colors?
And I didn’t realize Homer Simpson was Hungarian!

Thanks for the comments. I’m happy to hear that you like the format. Everything else can change. Thanks for the reminder about the font; I forgot about that. I was worried about keeping the buttons at the bottom simple, but it’s good to hear that keeping them only one or two words long is enough (with the added words with the rollover). About the color scheme, I’ve been experimenting about softening the colors, but I’m not an expert with Powerpoint. Did you say something about having trouble with colors in Photoshop, too?
Not only is Homer Hungarian, he’s a commie. Hence, his sneaky look.
